WHEN SHOULD I ENGAGE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
The earlier, the better. Ideally, an interior designer should be involved before key decisions are locked in, such as floor plans, cabinetry layouts, electrical locations, finishes, fixtures, fittings and furniture selections.
Bringing a designer in early can help you avoid costly changes later and make sure the design direction feels cohesive from the beginning. This is especially important for renovations, new builds, kitchens and bathrooms, where one decision can impact many others. Appliances, fittings, power points, lighting, plumbing locations and joinery all need to work together, so the earlier these details are considered, the better.
Even if you already have plans underway, we can review what has been proposed and help you refine the details before you move too far into quoting, ordering, or construction.
CAN YOU HELP IF WE ALREADY HAVE PLANS DRAWN?
Yes. Many clients come to us once they already have plans from a builder, building designer or architect, but still need help making the home feel resolved, functional and personal.
We can review your plans with a focus on layout, functionality, electrical considerations, joinery, finishes, fixtures, fittings, furnishings and the way each space will work in everyday life. This can be especially helpful before cabinetry, appliances, tiles, flooring, lighting, plumbing fixtures and other key selections are confirmed.
Our role is to bring another layer of detail to the process, helping you make confident decisions before everything is locked in.
HOW CAN AN INTERIOR DESIGNER HELP US AVOID COSTLY MISTAKES?
Renovating or building involves hundreds of decisions, and many of them have a flow-on effect. A tile choice can affect grout, lighting, cabinetry, paint colours and the overall feeling of a room. An appliance selection can impact joinery, electrical requirements, plumbing, clearances and how the space functions every day.
An interior designer helps you make these decisions with a clear plan, rather than choosing items in isolation. We consider the bigger picture, from layout and finishes to electrical requirements, fixtures, fittings, furniture and styling, helping you avoid expensive changes, rushed decisions and selections that do not work together.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FULL-SERVICE INTERIOR DESIGN AND FURNISHINGS AND STYLING?
Full-service interior design is a more comprehensive service that can include spatial planning, design concepts, material and finish selections, electrical and lighting considerations, joinery design, fixtures, fittings, furnishings, styling and design documentation.
Furnishings and styling focuses on the furniture and final layers of the home, such as sofas, beds, rugs, artwork, cushions, window furnishings, décor and styling details. However, it is still considered through the lens of layout, flow, function and how each space is used. It is not simply about choosing beautiful pieces, but making sure they work together practically and visually within your home.
Both services are valuable, but they support different stages of a project. If you are renovating, building or making structural and fixed design decisions, full-service interior design is usually the best fit. If your home is mostly complete but needs warmth, cohesion, functionality and finishing touches, furnishings and styling may be more suitable.
HOW MUCH SHOULD WE BUDGET FOR INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES?
The investment depends on the size, scope and complexity of your project. A single-room furnishings project will have a very different level of detail to a full-home renovation, kitchen design or new build.
During the enquiry process, we ask about your project type, location, timeline and budget so we can understand what level of support you need. From there, we can recommend the most suitable next step.
As a guide, our design services are structured around the scope of work required, with a detailed proposal provided before any design work begins.
DO YOU WORK WITH BUILDERS, ARCHITECTS AND TRADES?
Yes. We regularly work alongside builders, building designers, architects, suppliers and trades to help bring the design vision together.
Our role is to provide clear design direction, considered selections and documentation that supports the project team. This can include finishes, fixtures, fittings, lighting, joinery details, furniture selections and design intent.
We value a collaborative process and believe the best outcomes happen when everyone involved has clarity around the design direction, practical requirements and details that matter.
CAN WE WORK TOGETHER REMOTELY?
Yes. While JML Design is based between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and works with clients across South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales, remote design services are also available for select projects Australia-wide.
Remote projects can work well when there is clear communication, detailed plans, photos, measurements and a collaborative project team on site. Depending on the scope, we may work through video calls, digital presentations, schedules, documentation and supplier coordination.
If your project is outside our local service area, we can discuss whether remote design support is the right fit.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I ENQUIRE?
After you submit an enquiry, we’ll arrange a complimentary discovery call to learn more about your project, answer any initial questions and make sure we’re the right fit for each other.
The next step is a paid initial consultation, held in person where possible or via Zoom for remote projects. This is where we take a deeper look at your project, your lifestyle, who uses the space, what is and is not working, and what you would like to achieve.
Depending on the project, we may discuss layout, functionality, electrical and lighting requirements, finishes, fixtures, fittings, furnishings, budget, timeline and overall design direction. The purpose of this consultation is to understand your needs, gather the right information and begin forming a clear brief for your project.
After the consultation, we prepare a tailored scope of work and fee proposal outlining the recommended deliverables, process and investment for your project.
HOW LONG DOES THE DESIGN PROCESS TAKE?
The design timeline depends on the scope and complexity of your project. A smaller furnishings or selection-based project may move more quickly, while a full-service renovation, kitchen, bathroom or new build requires more time for planning, concepts, selections, documentation and revisions.
As a general rule, it is best to allow more time than you think you need. Good design decisions take consideration, and the process often involves coordination with builders, suppliers, trades and lead times.
Once we understand your project, we can provide a clearer indication of the expected design timeline.
DO YOU COORDINATE TRADES OR MANAGE THE RENOVATION?
JML Design provides interior design services, design direction, selections and documentation. We work collaboratively with builders, trades, suppliers and other professionals, but we do not manage the construction or act as the builder.
Construction management, site supervision, trade scheduling and building works are handled by your licensed builder or relevant trades. Our role is to support the design intent, clarify selections and provide design information that helps the project team understand the details of your home.
We will always clarify our role and scope before your project begins so everyone understands what is included.
